Meet Richard Bregman
Richard Bregman is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of MJB Asset Management LLC, an independent SEC-registered investment advisory firm. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Cornell University (1978), a J.D. from George Washington University (1981) and an MBA in Finance with honors from New York University (1989).
Prior to forming MJB Asset Management, Richard was a Vice President at Chase Manhattan Bank’s Global Asset Management & Private Banking division, where he managed investment portfolios for private banking clients and was responsible for analyzing and recommending the funds and asset allocation models used in private banking client portfolios. Prior to that, Richard practiced law in New York City for six years, primarily as a civil litigator helping clients resolve commercial disputes. Not satisfied with the practice of law and still wanting to help people, he changed course, earned his finance degree and, after gaining big bank experience, departed the corporate world to form MJB Asset Management.
Richard’s financial guidance is sought after, having led to appearances on CBS MoneyWatch’s Ask the Experts, CNN’s Business Day and WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News. Additionally, he has been quoted frequently in business publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Business Week, Investor’s Business Daily, Bottom Line Personal, Financial Planning magazine, Crain’s New York and Crain’s InvestmentNews. Richard also has been the subject of featured articles in Morningstar Advisor and The Wall Street Transcript.
In the community, he is a past board member of Friends of Firefighters, a non-profit that offers services and support to New York City’s firefighters and their families, and The Anselmo Academy, a non-profit that seeks to provide music instruction to children and adults regardless of talent level or ability to pay.
When not following the markets and talking with clients, Richard can be found coaching his son’s co-ed softball team, playing golf, practicing yoga, enjoying with his wife their subscription to the New York City Ballet or going to a New York Knicks basketball game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Now that you know Richard Bregman, learn more about working with MJB Asset Management:
Can MJB Asset Management work with me/my portfolio?
Yes! MJB Asset Management has clients in more than 10 states across the country and several countries overseas.
What are MJB Asset Management’s fees?
Our fee is calculated as a percentage of the market value of the client’s account and is billed and paid quarterly in arrears. Fees are typically deducted directly from the client’s account. We do not receive any other forms of payment from any other sources. We do not charge commissions and do not receive any incentive fees or other payments from any third parties.
Why choose a solo practitioner like MJB Asset Management over a larger investment firm?
Years ago, larger firms could claim (though not necessarily demonstrate) advantages over smaller firms in research or perhaps administrative services. Technology has largely eliminated any such advantages and leveled the playing field.
Today, the internet has done away with research advantages, as everyone now has access to global data and research reports. Continual enhancements to hardware (e.g., laptops, tablets, scanners, smartphones) and developments in software (e.g., Zoom, Teams, DocuSign, etc.) have improved connectivity between us and our clients and essentially done away with administrative advantages. As a result, at MJB Asset Management, you will be in direct contact with Richard Bregman, who is personally managing your account and who has access to all of the research tools necessary to effectively deliver returns that match your goals. You will be able to meet in person or digitally at whatever time meets your needs; you will have full access to your accounts at all times and will be able to monitor all activity within your account at all times.
MJB Asset Management is independent and objective, adhering to a fiduciary standard under which we are obligated to (and happily do) put our clients’ interests first, to put ourselves in our clients’ shoes. We do not sell products; we have no incentives to push particular investments; and we “eat our cooking,” i.e., invest in the same securities that we recommend for our clients.
Does MJB Asset Management provide financial planning services?
We do not provide formal financial planning services. We are always happy to discuss changes to your financial goals, answer questions and suggest solutions. We never charge for any such conversations and do not create any written financial plans.
What can I expect from working with MJB Asset Management?
Working with us is easy! You will always have direct access to Richard Bregman via phone or email. The logistics and mechanics are straightforward: we meet in person or by video conferencing; if you choose to proceed, we will send you account opening forms electronically for digital signature; we will arrange for your current holdings to be transferred to your new account, again all by digital signature; and we will typically talk with you one more time before investing and then we will begin to invest. After we have invested and the account is up and running, we will speak with you regularly, either in person or via video, or by phone.
